| Thallus placodioid, forming orbicular patches to 10 cm wide. Lobes diverse; marginal lobes flattened, contiguous, with rotund apices 2–7 mm wide; central lobes contiguous forming a compact, wrinkled surface; central portion of younger thalli consisting of small, short, irregularly and sparingly branched lobes 1–2 mm wide. Upper surface pale grey to grey. Medulla mostly solid. Lower surface pale brown or whitish near lobe apices. Apothecia common, 2–12 mm wide, subpedicellate; pedicel and thalline exciple wrinkled; exciple thin, involute especially when young; disc concave at first, becoming convex and irregular, pale brown to brown. Ascospores 5–8 × 3.5–6.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, P-. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, 2'-O-methylphysodic acid (minor); aletoronic acid (trace). | ||
